Future-Ready Retail with SAP

Retail is moving from connected channels to connected decision-making.

Retailers are balancing changing consumer expectations, tighter margins, complex supply chains, and rapid advances in AI. Deloitte’s 2026 global retail outlook found that most retailers are already using or planning to use AI for core operational capabilities, while 68% expect to deploy agentic AI for key operational and enterprise activities within the next 12 to 24 months.
BMCG helps retailers connect SAP, data, commerce, and supply chain operations so they can respond faster today and build the foundation for what comes next.
Retail Is Entering a More Connected Operating Model

What Is Changing in Retail?

Retail has moved well beyond the question of whether customers shop online or in stores. The bigger challenge is connecting every part of the customer and operational journey, from product discovery and inventory planning to fulfilment, delivery, and post-purchase service.
At the same time, AI is changing how consumers discover products and how retailers make decisions. Deloitte reports that nearly 68% of retail executives expect agentic AI to be deployed for key operational and enterprise activities within 12 to 24 months. Some retailers are already seeing AI-driven referral traffic account for 15% to 20% of total referrals.
This means retailers need more than another digital channel. They need connected systems, reliable data, flexible processes, and the ability to act on information quickly.

01

From Omnichannel Retail to Connected Commerce

Customers increasingly move between digital and physical channels during the same shopping journey. McKinsey identifies AI-assisted shopping, greater expectations for transparency and convenience, and changing consumer behaviour as three structural forces reshaping retail. Customers increasingly expect clear information about pricing, inventory, and delivery before they buy.
Deloitte also found that omnichannel shoppers spend 1.5 times as much each month as single-channel shoppers, while retail executives continue to prioritize real-time inventory visibility, unified customer data, and flexible fulfillment options.

02

AI Is Moving From Experiments to Retail Operations

AI is becoming part of everyday retail processes, including demand forecasting, supply chain management, marketing, customer service, and shopping experiences.
The National Retail Federation found that 86% of surveyed US retail AI leaders already had AI governance policies in place in 2025, while 93% planned to develop or continue developing those policies over the following 12 months. The same research found that 59% expected supply chain operations to be an important future AI implementation area.
The shift matters because AI depends on the quality and availability of the data beneath it. A retailer cannot expect reliable AI-driven decisions when inventory, customer, product, and transaction data remain fragmented across systems.

03

Inventory Visibility Is Becoming a Business Requirement

Inventory accuracy affects more than stock availability. It influences fulfilment, customer experience, working capital, markdowns, and the profitability of each order.
Retailers are moving toward connected inventory models that allow stock to be viewed and used across stores, warehouses, e-commerce, and other fulfilment points.
SAP cannot simply remain a back-office system. When connected with commerce, supply chain, analytics, and other applications, it can become part of the operational foundation retailers use to make faster decisions.

04

Consumers Are Redefining Value

Retailers are also dealing with consumers who are becoming more selective about where and how they spend.
The same research found that four in 10 Americans are now deal-driven or cost-conscious, including higher-income households. However, value is not limited to price; as much as 40% of brand value perception can come from non-price factors such as quality, service, checkout ease, loyalty, and employee interactions.
For retailers, this creates a wider challenge. Competing on price alone can put pressure on margins. Businesses also need to make the experience easier, more reliable, and more relevant.
What Retailers Need to Prepare For

What Does the Next Phase of Retail Require?

The next phase of retail will not be defined by one technology. It will depend on how well retailers connect technology, data, people, and operations, along with anticipating customers’ needs seamlessly.

Build a Single Operational View

Retailers need consistent information across finance, merchandising, inventory, stores, warehouses, e-commerce, and fulfillment.
A shared operational view gives teams a better basis for forecasting, replenishment, allocation, order management, and customer service.

Make Data Ready for AI

AI initiatives need more than an AI tool. They require accessible, accurate, governed data and clearly defined business rules.
This is why retailers should treat data quality, integration, governance, and architecture as part of their AI strategy rather than as separate technology projects.

Connect Commerce With the Core Business

An e-commerce platform should not operate as an isolated storefront. Orders, inventory, pricing, customer information, fulfilment, and financial data need to move between commerce and core business systems with minimal manual intervention.

Move From Reactive to Predictive Operations

Historical reports tell retailers what happened. Modern analytics and AI can help teams identify patterns, forecast demand, and respond earlier.
The goal is not to automate every decision. It is to give people better information at the point where decisions need to be made.

Design for Continuous Change

Retail technology cannot be treated as a one-time implementation. Consumer behaviour, commerce models, AI capabilities, regulations, and supply chain conditions will continue to change. Retailers therefore need technology environments that can integrate new capabilities without rebuilding the entire operating model each time.
What Can Retailers Influence?

What Can Retailers Shape for Better Outcomes?

Retailers cannot control every market condition. They cannot determine consumer spending, eliminate demand uncertainty, or prevent every supply chain disruption.
They can, however, improve the factors within their control.

Inventory Accuracy

Connect store, warehouse, and online inventory data so teams work from a more reliable view of available stock.

Data Quality and Governance

Establish consistent data definitions and ownership so analytics and AI are based on information the business can trust.

Process Automation

Reduce manual work and automate across order management, reporting, replenishment, finance, and other repetitive processes.

Decision Speed

Give merchandising, supply chain, finance, and store teams access to timely information rather than making them wait for spreadsheets and manually consolidated reports.

Customer Experience

Connect customer, product, inventory, order, and fulfillment information to create more consistent experiences across physical and digital channels.

Technology Readiness

Modernise the underlying ERP, integration, data, and cloud environment so the business can adopt new technologies without creating another layer of disconnected systems.

BMCG Perspective:

Retail transformation is not measured by how many systems are implemented. It’s rather measured by whether those systems help the business, make better decisions, serve customers more effectively, and respond faster to change.

How BMCG Helped a US Retailer Automate SAP Inventory Adjustments

Retailers need inventory systems that can keep pace with transactions across physical and digital channels. BMCG helped a US apparel and footwear retailer automate the flow of Shopify Point-of-Sale transaction data into SAP ECC, replacing a manual inventory posting process with automated validation and SAP material document creation.

The Challenge

The retailer operated Shopify Point-of-Sale alongside SAP ECC with the Apparel and Footwear Solution. Sales, returns, and cancellations generated transaction files that required manual processing in SAP.
Each processing cycle could take 2 to 4 hours. Errors were often identified only after posting attempts failed, while the existing process could handle only one file at a time and lacked automated error notifications.
As transaction volumes increased across multiple locations, the process created a growing operational bottleneck and increased the risk of inventory records remaining out of sync.

The SAP Solution

BMCG developed a custom ABAP solution to automate the creation of SAP material documents from Shopify Point-of-Sale transaction data.
The solution processes orders, returns, and cancellations and introduces a two-phase validation model.
First, transactions are validated before anything is posted. If errors are found, the posting process stops, and the affected records are captured in a structured error report.
Once validation passes, the system creates the required SAP material documents automatically.
The solution also supports batch processing, file archiving, and automated email notifications when errors occur.

The Results

OutcomeBeforeAfter
Inventory posting time2–4 hoursLess than 15 minutes
Processing timeManualApproximately 90% faster
Transaction typesManual processing3 automated types
File processingOne file at a timeAutomated batch processing

The solution also reduced manual data-entry risk, created an archive trail for processed files, and helped finance and operations teams maintain more consistent inventory information.
