SAP, AI & Digital Transformation Solutions for Apparel & Footwear Companies
Build Connected Operations That Keep Pace With Changing Demand
Apparel and footwear businesses operate in a fast-moving market shaped by seasonal demand, changing trends, inventory complexity, and growing customer expectations across retail and digital channels.
The challenge is not simply having more inventory or more technology. It is having the visibility to understand what is available, where it is located, and how demand is changing across stores, warehouses, eCommerce, and other sales channels.
BMCG helps apparel and footwear companies connect SAP, data, analytics, AI, and enterprise technologies to improve inventory visibility, streamline operations, strengthen omnichannel performance, and support long-term growth.
The Apparel & Footwear Industry Is Moving Toward Connected, Real-Time Operations
Apparel and footwear businesses manage a level of inventory complexity that many other industries do not face.
A product may appear to be available overall while the specific size, colour, or variant a customer wants is already out of stock. Long production lead times and seasonal replenishment cycles can make these gaps even harder to correct once they occur.
At the same time, customers expect to move between physical stores, eCommerce platforms, marketplaces, and pickup options without experiencing inconsistent inventory, pricing, or fulfilment.
What Is Changing Across the Apparel & Footwear Industry?
The industry is facing increasing pressure to make inventory available in the right place, at the right time, and through the right sales channel. Disconnected systems can make this difficult, particularly when inventory data does not provide enough visibility into individual product variants.
01
Apparel Stockouts Can Hide Below the Surface
An apparel product can appear fully available at an overall inventory level while specific sizes or colours are already unavailable.
For the customer, the product is effectively out of stock if their exact size or preferred variant cannot be purchased.
Long production lead times and seasonal replenishment cycles make these gaps harder to resolve quickly. This creates a need for connected, real-time inventory visibility across warehouses, stores, distribution centres, and digital sales channels.
The goal is not simply to know how many units of a style are available. It is to understand availability at the level where customers actually make purchasing decisions.
02
The Financial Cost of Inventory Distortion Is Significant
Inventory issues can directly affect revenue, margins, and customer retention.
Global inventory distortion costs retailers $1.7 trillion annually (6.2% of global retail sales), with 65.6% of that tied to stockouts specifically, and $690.9 billion in lost sales from empty shelves alone.
For apparel and footwear businesses, the impact can go beyond a single missed transaction.
70% of shoppers will switch to a different brand when their size or item is unavailable, and 30% will leave for another store entirely.
A stockout is not always just a missed sale. In a competitive market, it can also mean losing the customer to another retailer or brand.
03
Connected Systems Help Close Inventory Gaps
Inventory challenges often emerge when purchasing, warehousing, manufacturing, and eCommerce operations work from disconnected information.
Retailers who synchronize these functions on one connected system can identify gaps earlier and respond before they affect a customer purchase.
This is also reflected in BMCG’s experience, where connected inventory and SAP processes helped support a reduction in stockouts by 18% in 30 days.
The value comes from improving the flow of information across the business rather than adding another isolated tool or report.
04
Omnichannel Is Now a Basic Customer Expectation
Customers increasingly expect to move between in-store, online, and pickup experiences without friction.
At the same time, price sensitivity continues to influence purchasing decisions.
71% would switch brands over price, and over half plan to shop more affordable retailers.
For apparel and footwear brands, this creates pressure to make inventory and orders available across multiple channels while maintaining consistent pricing and customer experiences.
Businesses that cannot move inventory and fulfil orders effectively across channels risk losing customers to competitors that can.
Key Challenges Across the Apparel & Footwear Industry
Apparel and footwear companies need to manage the connection between demand, inventory, supply chain, pricing, and customer experience. The challenge is not only improving individual processes. It is ensuring these processes can work together as demand and market conditions change.
Demand Forecasting
Seasonal trends, changing consumer preferences, and shorter product cycles can make demand difficult to predict.
Connected data and planning processes can help businesses improve forecasting and make more informed decisions about production, inventory, and replenishment.
Inventory Visibility
Businesses need visibility across warehouses, retail stores, distribution centres, and online sales channels.
More detailed and connected inventory information can help teams identify availability gaps and better manage products across sizes, colours, and other variants.
Omnichannel Operations
Customers may interact with a brand through retail stores, eCommerce platforms, marketplaces, wholesale channels, and pickup options.
Connecting these channels with core business systems can help maintain more consistent inventory, pricing, order, and customer information.
Supply Chain Efficiency
Procurement, production planning, logistics, and supplier collaboration all affect how quickly businesses can respond to changing demand.
Connected supply chain processes can help improve visibility and coordination across these activities.
Pricing and Promotions
Managing pricing, discounts, and promotional campaigns across multiple channels can become complex when systems operate separately.
Integrated pricing processes can help improve consistency, reduce manual intervention, and support better control across sales channels.
Business Insights
Operational decisions depend on timely and reliable information.
Connected reporting and analytics can help businesses gain better visibility into inventory, sales performance, demand, supply chain activity, and overall operational performance.
Where Apparel & Footwear Businesses Can Create Better Outcomes
Market trends and consumer preferences cannot always be predicted. However, businesses can improve the systems and processes that determine how quickly they respond. The greatest opportunities often sit between traditionally disconnected parts of the business.
Inventory in stores, warehouses, distribution centres, and eCommerce channels should contribute to a clearer picture of available stock.
Connecting these systems can help businesses improve allocation decisions and reduce the risk of showing customers inaccurate availability.
Improve Visibility at the Variant Level
Aggregate inventory figures do not always show the full picture.
Greater visibility across sizes, colours, and other product variants can help businesses identify availability issues that might otherwise remain hidden.
Connect Demand With Supply and Replenishment
Demand forecasts are more useful when they connect directly with production, procurement, inventory, and replenishment decisions.
This can help businesses respond more effectively when customer demand changes.
Support Flexible Omnichannel Fulfilment
As customers move between digital and physical channels, businesses need processes that can support different fulfilment models without creating disconnected workflows.
Connected enterprise systems can help improve coordination between inventory, orders, warehouses, stores, and logistics partners.
Prepare Data for AI and Automation
AI and automation can support forecasting, inventory planning, document processing, and operational decision-making.
However, these capabilities depend on connected and reliable data.
Strengthening the underlying system and data foundation can help businesses create practical value from AI rather than adding technology without a clear operational purpose.

From Disconnected Inventory to Connected Operations
The challenge for many apparel and footwear businesses is not a lack of data. It is that inventory, sales, supply chain, warehouse, and customer information can sit across separate systems. This makes it harder to understand the full picture, particularly when availability differs by size, colour, location, or sales channel.
BMCG helps organisations connect SAP and enterprise systems to create a more consistent flow of information across the business. The focus is on improving visibility, reducing manual processes, supporting faster decisions, and creating an operational foundation that can adapt as the market changes.
Apparel and footwear transformation involves more than implementing a new platform.
It requires an understanding of how procurement, inventory, warehousing, supply chain, sales, finance, and digital channels work together.
BMCG brings SAP, enterprise integration, data, analytics, AI, and automation capabilities together to support that wider transformation.

How BMCG Helped a Large Consumer Goods Manufacturer Streamline Customer Returns With SAP S/4HANA
Apparel and footwear businesses manage returns across customers, stores, distributors, warehouses, quality teams, and finance. When returns are handled through emails, spreadsheets, and disconnected processes, businesses can lose visibility into return status, delay credits, and create inventory discrepancies.
BMCG helped a large FMCG manufacturer redesign its end-to-end returns process inside SAP S/4HANA, connecting customer service, warehouse operations, quality inspection, and finance through a standardized and automated workflow.
The Challenge
The organization managed returns across a pan-India distribution network, with products returned for reasons including damaged goods, delivery errors, excess stock, expired inventory, and quality complaints. The process was largely manual, with return requests handled through emails and WhatsApp.
There was no standardized return authorization process or audit trail across regions. Customers and internal teams also had limited visibility into return status, making it difficult to track where a return stood in the process.
Credit memo creation was handled manually, resulting in a 10-day lag between return approval and credit settlement and a 12% error rate. Returned goods were also not consistently categorized when received, leading to inventory discrepancies and reducing inventory accuracy to 82%.
The SAP Solution
BMCG designed and implemented an end-to-end returns management process inside SAP S/4HANA, connecting customer service, warehouse operations, quality management, and finance into one standardized workflow.
The solution automated return request creation with original order and billing references, return order validation and approval, inbound return delivery, goods receipt, quality inspection, and credit memo processing.
BMCG also configured separate inventory categories for saleable, damaged, inspection, and scrap stock. SAP QM integration supported inspection lot creation, defect recording, and acceptance or rejection decisions.
Automated credit memo processing was configured to generate the required financial documents after return approval, removing manual settlement steps and improving processing accuracy.
